150 Years Iron and Coal Mining University of Leoben
The Styrian Iron and Coal Institute in Vordernberg was opened on November 4, 1840. To hold the position of professor, Archduke Johann selected 24-year-old Peter Tunner, who collected valuable experience in this field during his travels to leading iron-mining countries from his years as a student until assuming office in the school's opening year. The revolutionary year 1848 brought about fundamental changes for the school. It was transferred to Leoben and on September 2, 1861 renamed the Mining Academy. Its appointment to Mining University in 1904 and equivalent status with the Technical University through the awarding of doctorate degrees reflected the increasing importance of the institute. The world-renowned Mining University has carried the name Iron and Coal Mining University of Leoben since October 1, 1975.
