Gliding World Championship in Wiener Neustadt - Para-ski World Championship in Damüls

Date of issue: March 31, 1989
Face value: AS 6
Commemorative stamp

Gliding has developed rapidly in Austria since roughly 1925. The center for gliding was established in 1929 on the Spitzerberg, and a center for gliding in the Alps developed in Zell am See. In 1937, 31 participated in the first championship, which is even considered a world championship and held on the Wasserkuppe. The XXI Gliding World Championship in 1989 in Wiener Neustadt were especially symbolic: For the first time the competitions could be flown cross-border, because then General Secretary of the Communist Party, Janos Kadar, consented to open Hungarian air space for competitive flights within the framework of the world championship. This commemorative postage stamp is also dedicated to another 1989 world championship event: Para-skiing evolved into a modern sporting combination from disaster assistance in wintry mountainous regions. The second world championships in this sporting discipline took place from April 1-8 1989 in Damüls, Vorarlberg.
