Dachstein Ice Caves
The Dachstein Ice Caves lie near Obertraun, in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria. This fantastic world of bizarre ice palaces provide visitors a truly amazing experience. Even early on, those holding political office recognized the value of this unique natural beauty and in 1928 it was placed under legal protection. In 1963 the entire Dachstein region was declared a nature reserve. The entrance into the caves lies at 1,420 meters above seal level, its exit lies at 1,458 meters, and the total length of the Dachstein Ice Caves measures approximately 2000 meters. In 1987, exactly 40 years had passed since the Dachstein Ice Caves were opened to the public. On September 14, 1947 the first carve was made in the initial path under Federal President Dr. Karl Renner. This path leads from Obertraun to Schönbergalm, at which point the Dachstein Ice Caves are easily accessible. The Dachstein Railroad boosted the fascinating cave-world into an international attraction.
