Joseph Haydn: Divertimento H 2 Nr. 22

Joseph Haydn (1732 Rohrau/Lower Austria - 1809 Vienna) composed this Divertimento before 1765. The term Divertimento was in use since the end of the 17th c and merely refers to the entertaining quality of a musical work. Divertimenti are suites - or sonata-like instrumental works for varying forces - from solo instruments to an orchestra. The number of movements also varies so that as many as 12 movements were used.
