Waldheim, Kurt, b. St. Andrä-Wördern (Lower Austria), Dec. 21, 1918, d. Vienna, June 14, 2007, diplomat and politician (ÖVP, Austrian People´s Party). 1968-1970 Federal Foreign Minister, 1971-1981 Secretary-General of the UN. 1971 as ÖVP candidate was defeated by F. Jonas in the presidential elections; ran again for president in 1986. His hesitation in giving information on his role as an officer of the German armed forces in World War II led to international criticism. After his election as Federal President (1986-1992) was diplomatically isolated. His election as Federal President also led to a fundamental discussion on Austria's role in the Nazi era.
