Stürgkh, Count Karl, b. Graz (Styria), Oct. 30, 1859, d. Vienna, Oct. 21, 1916 (assassinated), politician. From 1891 member of the Reichsrat, where he joined the group of landowners loyal to the Constitution; 1909-1911 Education Minister, 1911-1916 Prime Minister. On March 16, 1914 adjourned the Reichsrat, pursued an authoritarian style of government, refused to comply with the repeated call for a convocation of Parliament and was therefore shot by the Social Democrat F. Adler.
