Sechter, Simon, b. Frymburk, Czech Republic (then Friedberg), Oct. 11, 1788, d. Vienna, Sept. 10, 1867. Music theorist and composer. Teacher of A. Bruckner and C. Zeller in Vienna; 1810-1825 teacher at the Institute for the Education of the Blind; 1824 court organist, 1851 teacher at the Conservatory. While his compositions were regarded as too theoretical in nature, S. enjoyed a good reputation as a teacher.


Publications: Praktische Generalbaß-Schule, 1835; Die Grundsätze der musikal. Komposition, 3 vols., 1853-1854.
