Schallaburg Palace: arcaded courtyard

Schallaburg palace, Lower Austria, Renaissance palace near Melk (municipality of Schollach) with a two-storey arcaded courtyard. Schallaburg was rebuilt from a medieval castle in 1572 and is considered the most significant work of the Lower Austrian Renaissance; it was one of the most important Protestant strongholds. Damaged during World War II and later renovated, Schallaburg Palace has served as a museum and exhibition hall since 1974; the collection of historical toys has been on permanent exhibition here since 1997.

Literature: R. Feuchtmüller et al., Schallaburg, 21975.
