Schallaburg was rebuilt from a medieval castle in 1572 and is considered the most significant work of the Lower Austrian Renaissance; it was one of the most important Protestant strongholds. Damaged during World War II and later renovated, Schallaburg Palace has served as a museum and exhibition hall since 1974; the collection of historical toys has been on permanent exhibition here since 1997.
