Leipzig (Germany), Jan. 23, 1922, conductor, from 1866 student at the Vienna Conservatory (under G. Hellmesberger sr. and J. Hellmesberger sr. as well as under F. O. Dessoff), 1874-1877 violinist at the court opera orchestra. 1878 went to Leipzig, where he began his international career as a conductor. Concentrated on the works of A. Bruckner. As a conductor he set an example for following generations (W. Furtwängler). Also worked as a composer. Works: symphony; orchestra phantasy on themes from V. Neßler"s "Trompeter von Säckingen"; string sextet; violin sonata; "Christnacht" cantata. Literature: NÖB; ÖBL.
