Mayrhofer, Johann Baptist


Mayrhofer, Johann (Baptist), b. Steyr (Upper Austria), Nov. 3, 1787, d. Vienna (suicide), Feb. 5, 1836, poet and censor. Wrote many song texts for his friend F. Schubert, with whom he shared an apartment for 3 years, wrote the librettos for the singspiel "Die beiden Freunde von Salamanca" (1815) and the opera "Adrast". He published "Erinnerungen an F. Schubert" (Memories of Schubert) in 1829. His literary estate was published by E. von Feuchtersleben in 1843.
