Mayerling


Mayerling, Lower Austria, village in the district of Baden; belongs to the municipality of Alland. Manor, from 1550 in the possession of the monastery of Heiligenkreuz; Prince Rudolf bought the manor in 1886 and had it turned into a hunting lodge. It was in this lodge that he killed his lover Mary Vetsera and then committed suicide on January 30, 1889. His father, Emperor Franz Joseph, who wanted to found a new church, had the building turned into a convent which was consequently settled by Carmelite nuns.
