Clare, George eigentlich Georg Klaar


Clare, George (real name: Georg Klaar), b. Vienna, Dec. 20, 1920, author, publishing house director. Emigrated 1938 via Ireland to Great Britain; his parents were killed in Auschwitz. From 1941 volunteer in the British army; 1946-1954 worked for the Control Commission for Germany; since 1947 British citizen. 1954-1983 director of the Axel Springer publishing house in London. Received the W. H. Smith Literary Award for his book "Last Waltz in Vienna" (1981; Letzter Walzer in Wien, 1984), on which the ORF (Austrian broadcasting corporation) and the BBC have based television documentaries.
