Bleckmann, Johann Heinrich August, b. Solingen (Germany),
Feb. 16, 1826, d. Mürzzuschlag, Styria, Oct. 19, 1891, industrialist; founder of
the first Phoenix steel works for the production of steel for blades and tools
in Mürzzuschlag in 1862; he used the first crucible cast furnaces in Austria
(1864) and open-hearth furnaces with acid lining (1874). In 1920 the company was
renamed "B.-Stahlwerke" and in 1924 it merged with Schoeller Stahlwerke AG in
In 1975 it was incorporated into the newly founded Vereinigte Edelstahlwerke (VEW) company.
