Albani (Albanus), Matthias, b. St. Nikolaus near Kaltern (South Tyrol) March 28, 1621, d. Bozen/Bolzano (South Tyrol) Feb. 7, 1712, violin-maker. Widely acknowledged for his skilled work, 1640-1690 numerous fakes were detected. His technique had little in common with that of Stainer and can more likely be traced to the Italian art of violin making. Influenced the art of violin-making in Germany and the Tyrol in the 18th century. Albani´s sons Michael (1677-1730) and Joseph (1680-1722) also became violin-makers.
